18th Century Memento Mori French, diamond set Skull to an 18ct gold stick pin
Just reduced so wont be around for long!!!!!!!! This is a collectors very old (18th century Georgian) `Momemto Mori` Skull stick pin with diamond set eyes. This stick pin comes in an old box, but not the original case and the case lid is detached from the base and could be repaired, although i have not done this. The scull tests as silver and white enamel (there is no damage to the enamel so fantastic condition) set with two sparkling rose cut diamond eyes each diamond is 0.25carat assessed as clarity VS and colour E/F. The skull which is 16mm long and is attached to an 18ct yellow Gold pin (which have two small Marks/stamps/hallmarks on its side, one which is lozenge shaped with a strange symbol inside it and French). You will not find one of this age and condition anywhere, so collectors beware, this will not be around for long!!!
The gross weight of the skull and pin is 5.45 grammes. It is thought by safeguard that the skull was probably a pendant originally and adapted to a stick Pin in the late 19th/early 20th century. This pin is a link to the tradition of the memento mori - an object designed to remind us that life is brief and that we should seize the moment while we are here. Since the beginning of time, the skull is been used as a symbol of mortality, victory, the ultimate Memento Mori. The skull represented the contemplation of eternity and Latin for Remember you must die.
