The flower, which is highly detailed and voluptuous, with its bulging heart-shaped petals, has at its center a small genuine pearl, which is echoed by two pearls on spokes at the sides. The luster of the pearls beautifully matches that of the flower. The shimmery iridescent enamel is painstakingly shaded on the flower petals and the colors are most harmonious with that of the gold. The pin is highly detailed, from the flourishes on the fancy frame down to the lines in each flower petal radiating from the pearl. The iridescent enamel of the flower, in blushing shades of pale, but vivid, rose, shading to cream, magically seems to glow from within, as if emanating golden sunlight and the sheen has an ethereal, almost translucent quality that fairly pulsates. Measuring about 1" wide by 1/2" tall, it is well made and nicely proportioned. The locking mechanism on the clasp is a lever one moves up and down to secure or release the pin stem.
It is signed "K14" followed by an "R" for the maker. I have not been able to identify the mark. At the base of the top center petal, near the pearl, on the sides (and perhaps also in a narrow band on the adjacent edge of the next petal) there are small areas where there is no enamel that look more like incomplete enamel coverage from the time it was made than damage.
Please see the (enlarged) photos, where hopefully you can see it is of little consequence. And apart from this, which is not noticeable except upon close examination and magnification, this more than a century-old brooch is in Very Good vintage condition, with just expected surface scratches and dirt, including a little white residue at the base of the pearls and on the back of the petals here and there, along with expected irregularities in the natural pearls and the usual minor manufacturing imperfections, in the incomplete coverage mentioned above.Mostly it could use a clean, which has not been attempted, and the diminutive piece is truly Exquisite! Feminine and romantic, this finely rendered authentic antique Art Nouveau 14 karat gold and pearl flower pin with its iridescent enamel is really special. Simply beautiful, it is a rare specimen of a signed "Newark enamel" and will be a superb addition to a collection.
Of course, it would also make a terrific gift. You could bear to part with it, and will come to you in a gift box, just in case.An outstanding example of artistry in 14 karat gold and enamel, this detailed pin, with its remarkable sheen and lustrous iridescent enamel and pearl will bring the opulence and romance of jewelry history and gentler times to your collection.
