Antique Victorian 14k Gold Crescent Moon Seed Pearl Signed Brooch Pin
The crescent moon was a popular symbol during the Victorian era, signifying the feminine moon goddess, and has been associated with ideas of female empowerment. This particular 14k gold moon brooch is a sliver, a breath of a crescent moon and could not be mistaken for anything else. The delicate setting with a feather-light weight, is inlaid with slightly graduating creamy seed pearls along its full length and beautifully mimics the moon's radiance. This piece has a fresh look despite some wear and condition issues. The setting has one "leaf" missing from the setting. There is a significant chip at the back of one of the stones and some type of seal or glue was applied at the back, these irregularities show through to the front a bit. There are no other chips or surface wear to the amethysts. The catch of the pinback was repaired and replaced at some point and this shows through to the front of the brooch. Secure, the catch of the clasp was repaired at some point. Material Tests for 14k, natural amethyst, glass. Figural jewelry includes any piece that has been shaped into an animal, person, object, or detailed day in the life scene.
Antique and vintage figural jewelry is often quite charming and collectible for the realistic or cutesy details. Specific objects or animals became popular and prolific in jewelry during certain time periods, Scotty dogs during the 1940s for example, or swallow birds during the Victorian era. Figural jewelry is special for its detail and realism but also tells the story of the decade they were made in.
Symbolism in antique and vintage jewelry is common, yet it can be hard to spot if you dont know what youre looking for. Often, specific natural gemstones, flowers, birds, and motifs like stars and anchors were imbued with meanings that have fallen out of present-day societys collective memory. To appreciate the power of symbols in antique jewelry is to imagine what it would have been like to wear the piece and step back into history.
